Your First Government Job Application: A Practical Checklist

By NewGenJobs Editorial Team · 20 August 2026

A public-service application can look intimidating because it is formal and precise. The good news is that most avoidable problems are ordinary preparation problems. This checklist helps you organise the work before the closing date.

Start with the advert, not your CV

Read the minimum requirements line by line before changing any document. Separate essential requirements from added advantages, and be honest about the difference. A strong application is a clear match to the post—not a long list of unrelated experience.

Write down the post title, reference number, closing date, location and submission instructions in one place. These small details are often the first things a busy screening team checks.

Build one complete application pack

Keep an up-to-date CV, identity document, qualifications and any role-specific registrations in a clearly named folder. If certification is requested, check the advert for its wording and do not assume a document from a previous application still meets it.

Complete the Z83 carefully and use the version requested by the employer. Match the post title and reference number exactly to the advert. Before submitting, ask a trusted person to compare those fields against the original notice.

Submit early and retain proof

Aim to submit at least two working days ahead of the deadline. This leaves room for attachment-size problems, a slow portal, a missing signature, or a last clarification. Save the submitted PDF or email, its date and any confirmation number.

After applying, use a simple tracker: post, reference, date submitted, contact details, expected next step and outcome. It will help you prepare for calls and learn from your search without relying on memory.
