How to Prepare for a Competency Interview in South Africa
By NewGenJobs Editorial Team · 14 August 2026
Competency interviews are designed to discover how you have handled real situations. The best preparation is not memorising polished lines; it is choosing truthful examples and explaining your decisions clearly.
Create an evidence bank
List six to ten situations from work, study, volunteering or projects. Include examples of solving a problem, helping a difficult customer, working in a team, managing time, learning quickly and handling a mistake. Each situation can answer more than one question.
For every example, note the situation, what you were responsible for, what you did and what changed. Keep the focus on your contribution while giving enough context for an interviewer to understand the stakes.
Use a simple answer shape
STAR—situation, task, action and result—is a useful structure because it prevents an answer from wandering. Give context briefly, spend most of the time on your actions, then state the result and what you learned.
If you do not have formal work experience, use coursework, family responsibilities, sport, community work or a group assignment. Interviewers can still assess planning, judgement and communication from those examples.
Prepare for the role, not only the questions
Read the job advert and identify the behaviours it repeats: service, accuracy, confidentiality, teamwork, reporting or problem-solving. Select examples that demonstrate those behaviours in plain language.
Finish with two thoughtful questions about the work, team or first months in the role. It signals preparation and helps you judge whether the opportunity is a fit for you too.
