Department of Correctional Services

Mandate

The Department of Correctional Services manages the incarceration, rehabilitation, and reintegration of offenders across South Africa's correctional centres, and oversees community corrections (parole and probation supervision).

Structure

Correctional officials follow their own uniformed structure similar to SAPS. The department also employs social workers, psychologists, educators, artisans, and administrative staff across its centres and regional/national offices.

Career paths

Uniformed correctional official entry generally goes through a dedicated recruitment and training intake. Professional and administrative posts (social work, education, admin) are advertised through the standard PSC Circular process.
