About human resources and people management roles in South Africa

Human Resources professionals are in demand across all sectors of the South African economy. In the public service, HR posts are advertised regularly at salary levels 7 to 12, covering everything from HR clerks to Chief Directors of Human Resources. Labour Relations is a particularly in-demand HR specialism in South Africa given the complexity of the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and the Employment Equity Act. Familiarity with PERSAL (the government HR system) is essential for most public sector HR roles.

·For government HR roles, experience with PERSAL is listed as a key requirement. Include this explicitly on your CV if you have it.
·Labour relations specialists need current knowledge of recent CCMA and Labour Court decisions and the applicable legislation.
·SABPP (South African Board for People Practices) registration is increasingly expected for senior HR posts.
·Learning and development roles often require experience with SETA processes, workplace skills plans, and annual training reports.
