About construction and built environment roles in South Africa

The construction and built environment sector is a major employer in South Africa, driven by government infrastructure spending and private development. Quantity surveyors, site managers, civil engineers, and town planners are in consistent demand. Professional registration with bodies such as SACQSP (quantity surveyors), SACAP (architects), and SACLAP (landscape architects) is required for regulated posts. Large government infrastructure projects are administered through provincial departments of Public Works.

·Include your professional registration number and body (SACQSP, SACAP, ECSA, SACLAP) prominently on your CV.
·Government built environment posts often specify CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board) contractor grading requirements for more senior roles.
·Town planning posts in local government require registration with SACPLAN and knowledge of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA).
·Project and site management roles increasingly require knowledge of the JBCC (Joint Building Contracts Committee) standard contract.
