About communications and stakeholder engagement roles in South Africa

Communications and stakeholder engagement roles in the South African public sector fall under the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) framework. These roles require excellent written and verbal communication skills, often in more than one official language. Stakeholder and community liaison posts are particularly common at provincial and municipal government level where public participation in government processes is a legal requirement.

·Government communications posts often require proficiency in at least one African language in addition to English or Afrikaans.
·A degree in Communications, Journalism, or Public Relations is the standard minimum for most government communications roles.
·Media liaison experience - managing press releases, journalist inquiries, and spokesperson functions - is specifically valued for senior communications posts.
·Community liaison roles at municipal level may require evening and weekend availability for public meetings and community engagement sessions.
