About sales and business development roles in South Africa

Sales roles are among the most frequently advertised positions in the South African private sector, spanning financial services, FMCG, technology, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing industries. Compensation structures typically combine a base salary with commission or performance bonuses, meaning the total package can vary significantly from the advertised base. Business development roles in professional services and technology tend to require more seniority and a demonstrable network.

·Quantify your sales achievements on your CV - revenue generated, targets exceeded, and client retention rates are what recruiters look for.
·For financial services sales roles (insurance, banking, investments), FAIS accreditation and a valid RE5 certificate are typically required.
·Sales roles that involve driving to clients require a valid unendorsed driver's licence and often a roadworthy personal vehicle.
·Commission structures vary enormously. Clarify the split between base salary and commission before accepting any offer.
