About graduate, learnership, and internship opportunities

Graduate programmes, learnerships, and internships are critical entry points into the South African workforce for young people. The public sector runs a significant number of internship programmes through DPSA and SA Youth, typically offering 12 to 24 month placements with a monthly stipend. Private sector graduate programmes are more competitive, often accepting fewer than 5% of applicants, but offer structured development and frequently lead to permanent employment.

·Apply as early as possible. Many programmes close before their stated deadline once they reach capacity.
·Learnership stipends are set by the relevant SETA and are not negotiable, but the qualification you earn has real market value.
·For government internships, you will need a Z83 form even though you are applying for a temporary placement.
·Use your internship or learnership period to build a portfolio of work and professional references. These matter more than the programme name when you apply for permanent roles.
