About legal and compliance roles in South Africa

Legal professionals in South Africa operate under a dual qualification system - attorneys are admitted through the Legal Practice Council and advocates through a Bar Council. Government legal posts - particularly at the State Attorney's office, National Prosecuting Authority, and Legal Aid South Africa - are advertised through PSC Circulars and department career pages. Compliance roles in banking, insurance, and listed companies are governed by sector-specific regulatory frameworks including FICA, POPIA, and FSB regulations.

·For government legal posts, admission as an attorney or advocate in South Africa is typically the primary minimum requirement.
·Include your Law Society or Legal Practice Council admission date and status on your CV.
·Legal posts at the National Prosecuting Authority require South African citizenship and a security clearance in addition to legal qualifications.
·Compliance roles in financial services require familiarity with FICA, the Financial Intelligence Centre's guidance notes, and sector-specific regulations from the FSCA.
