About environmental and conservation roles in South Africa

South Africa has a significant environmental management and conservation sector driven by the country's biodiversity, its obligations under international environmental treaties, and expanding renewable energy projects. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, SANParks, and provincial conservation authorities are major public sector employers. Environmental impact assessment practitioners and renewable energy specialists are in growing demand in the private sector.

·EIA practitioners must be registered with EAPASA (Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa) for regulated assessment work.
·Conservation posts with SANParks and provincial nature reserves often require a BSc in Natural Sciences, Ecology, or Conservation Biology.
·Climate and sustainability roles increasingly require knowledge of GHG accounting frameworks such as the GHG Protocol and South Africa's Carbon Tax Act.
·Waste management posts at municipal level require knowledge of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act and municipal by-laws.
