The North West Province is a significant platinum mining province and home to some of the world's richest platinum group metal deposits. Rustenburg is the centre of the platinum belt and sees consistent demand for mining engineers, metallurgists, and technical operators. Outside mining, the public sector and agriculture (particularly sunflowers and maize) are the major employers.

Platinum mining roles in North West often require SAMTRAC or COMSOC 1 & 2 certification for supervisory and safety roles. Blasting certificates from the Department of Mineral Resources are required for all mining blast crew members.
