About health, safety, and quality roles in South Africa

Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) professionals are in demand across mining, construction, manufacturing, and government infrastructure projects. The Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Mine Health and Safety Act impose strict duties on South African employers. Quality management roles, particularly those involving ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001, are in demand in manufacturing, food processing, and professional services.

·A SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Certificate) or equivalent NOSA qualification is the baseline credential for most South African HSE roles.
·For mining safety roles, a SIMRAC or Mine Overseer certificate may be required depending on the level of the post.
·ISO auditor certification (Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor) is valuable for quality management roles.
·The Department of Employment and Labour periodically advertises inspection posts for its Health and Safety Inspectorate. These posts require relevant technical experience and are based provincially.
