About medical and health professional roles in South Africa

Medical officer and health professional posts in South Africa are advertised primarily through provincial Departments of Health. The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) registration is a mandatory requirement for all medical, dental, and allied health professional posts. Posts are available across all nine provinces, with the greatest concentration in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape. Rural posts often carry a rural allowance in addition to the base salary.

·Include your HPCSA registration number, registration category, and renewal date on every application.
·Medical officer posts in public hospitals are graded at salary levels 8 and above depending on speciality and experience.
·Community Service year posts are allocated through a separate HPCSA process - not through PSC Circular applications.
·Rural and underserved area posts frequently carry an 8 to 22 percent rural allowance on top of the base salary package.
