Agriculture and the broader agri-environment sector employs a significant proportion of South Africa's workforce, particularly in the Western Cape (wine, citrus, fruit), KwaZulu-Natal (sugar, timber), Limpopo (subtropical fruit, game farming), and the Free State (grain). Government demand comes from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, provincial agriculture departments, the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), and South African National Parks (SANParks). Conservation and environmental management roles are advertised through SANParks, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and CapeNature.
Agricultural extension officers in government typically require a degree or diploma in Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Science, or a related field. Veterinarians must be registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC). Environmental management posts may require a degree in Environmental Science, Conservation Ecology, or Natural Resource Management. For game farming and conservation roles, field ranger certification from relevant provincial bodies is often required.
Government agriculture posts (extension officers, agronomists) are graded at salary levels 7 to 9, earning R300,000 to R450,000 per year. Registered veterinarians in the public sector are employed on the OSD for veterinarians. Private sector agri-business roles in production management and agronomy at senior level can earn R500,000 to R800,000 per year.
