Education is one of the largest employers in the South African public sector. Provincial Departments of Education collectively employ over 400,000 teachers and support staff. The South African Schools Act and the Employment of Educators Act govern recruitment for public school posts, which are managed through each provincial education department - not directly through schools. Higher education institutions (universities and TVET colleges) manage their own recruitment independently and advertise on their own websites as well as platforms like NewGenJobs.
Registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) is a legal requirement for all teaching posts in public and independent schools. The minimum qualification for a public school teacher is a REQV 13 (a four-year teaching qualification or a three-year degree plus a PGCE). For TVET college lecturers, a trade certificate or industry qualification relevant to the subject is often accepted in addition to a teaching qualification.
Public school educators are employed on a post level system: Post Level 1 (classroom educator), Post Level 2 (head of department), Post Level 3 (deputy principal), Post Level 4 (principal). Salaries at Post Level 1 range from approximately R280,000 to R400,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications. Posts in shortage subjects - Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Accounting - are sometimes offered with additional incentives in provinces that have discretion to do so.
