Healthcare is one of the most consistently in-demand sectors in South Africa. The public health system - administered through nine provincial Departments of Health and the national Department of Health - employs the vast majority of clinical staff. Professional nurses, enrolled nurses, clinical associates, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and radiographers are all classified as scarce skills, meaning vacancies frequently remain open for extended periods. Private hospital groups including Netcare, Mediclinic, and Life Healthcare also run significant recruitment campaigns, particularly for specialist nursing and allied health roles.
Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) is mandatory for all nursing posts. Allied health professionals must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Medical officers require registration with the Health Professions Council under the Medical and Dental Board. Community health workers in the public sector are typically required to hold at least a relevant NQF level 4 qualification.
Public sector healthcare salaries are determined by the Occupation-Specific Dispensation (OSD), a separate salary structure from the standard public service scale. Professional nurses in government typically earn between R350,000 and R550,000 per year depending on speciality and years of service. Medical officers start significantly higher. Private sector salaries vary and are generally market-related, with specialist nursing roles in ICU, theatre, and neonatal care commanding a premium.
