Logistics, supply chain, and procurement are critical sectors in South Africa given its role as a major commodity exporter and the importance of Durban Port as the busiest on the African continent. Transnet, the Post Office, and large municipalities are major public sector employers in this space. The private sector demand is dominated by retail supply chains (Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Checkers), freight forwarders, e-commerce fulfilment, and mining logistics. The Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA) has created significant demand for procurement professionals with B-BBEE compliance knowledge in the public sector.
The Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) qualification is widely recognised across both public and private sectors. Supply chain management degrees and diplomas from South African universities are the standard entry point. Government supply chain management (SCM) posts require knowledge of the PFMA, Treasury Regulations, and the Preferential Procurement Regulations. A valid Code 14 (EC) driver's licence and Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) are required for heavy vehicle and fleet management roles.
Logistics and supply chain roles in the South African public sector are graded at salary levels 7 to 12, earning between R300,000 and R700,000 per year. Private sector logistics managers at senior level earn R500,000 to R900,000 depending on the size of the network managed. Freight forwarding and customs clearing specialists with FIATA or SAAFF credentials command a market premium.
